For the last year, pumping has been an ongoing question for me.
Will it help me? Do I want something attatched to me 24/7? And then, probably foremost, can I afford it?!
Obviously, the answer to the first question was yes... It will. It's not just a question of do I want this, it's a necessity. With 36 episodes of DKA in under 15 years, a pump can only be good, right? So, the answer to the first question renders the second question unnecessary, in my opinion.
Money... a big issue. Once I decided I wanted a pump, and my endo okay-ed it, I had to figure out how to save somewhere between $4000 and $7000... not easy. To be honest, I had pretty much given up on the idea for a long time.
So, skip forward to three days ago.
A lovely lady in the US ( I am in Australia) was giving away a spare Cozmo 1700 that she and her hubby had lying in the cupboard, unused for several years. This lovely lady is now sending me that pump, and I can't WAIT!!!
All my supplies are available here, no problem, and I can get my endo to change my insulin script to bottles from penfills, no dice.
So finally, kit's gonna be a pumper!

Wow Kit, a pump! I'm sooo jealous! Let us know how it goes.
Welcome to the world of blogging! I look forward to future posts. Your humour & great writing will be an asset to us all.
I saw your comment on Johnboy's blog. Welcome to the OC! - Wonderful wise, insightful and compassionate people. I have been blogging almost a year and love it.
I have had 2 episodes of DKA and both of them left me exhausted and unbalanced for weeks afterward.
Best wishes for improved health.
Kathy
Hey Kit,
Its sstrumello (Scott) from DTF. I am a former pumper myself, and many people think pumps are great, I was less enthusiastic about wearing a pump for a variety of reasons. However, I think everyone with diabetes (at those of us with T1DM) should be given the opportunity to try it at least once. You may find it makes managing things a lot easier. The biggest challenge is getting your basal rates right, then the rest should fall into place. It will also teach you a lot about identifying what's behind your numbers, something I didn't really do much of before I wore the pump. Just know that you don't have to stick with the pump if you don't really like it -- there's no harm in returning to multiple daily injections (MDI) with a pen!
I love my pump and you will too I bet! I just got a link to your blog from the DTF blog so I will add you to my blogroll now.
Welcome to the OC and to pumping!
Hi kit
I think you'll like being a pumper. And I agree with Scott, get your basals right and the rest is a lot easier.
Don't forget to get your blog in the Diabetes OC directory. And welcome to the blogosphere.
Hi Kit, welcome to blogging. Hope your Cozmo works out for you. That's what I use and it has helped me tremendously. Hopefully this isn't an issue, but if the pump has been dormant for a while and the internal battery has died, I'm not sure if you can revive it or not. I had a "spare" older model cozmo that I tried to revive the other day and that was the case. Maybe another blogger will have a suggestion if you encounter that. Hopefully not and you are already off and pumping.
